Initially, Simion had refused to run, instead supporting another far-right politician, Călin Georgescu. However, after Georgescu was barred from the election, Simion decided to enter the race himself. Simion has been banned from entering Ukraine since 2011. Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) cited his systematic anti-Ukrainian activities and efforts to discredit Ukraine internationally. He has also been repeatedly accused of ties with Russian intelligence services.
