I always thought the exact phrase "Revenge is a dish best served cold" was a quote from The Godfather, but it's actually a "Klingon proverb" (according to Khan) from Star Trek II "The Wrath of Khan"!
The phrase has been around in different similar shapes since maybe the 18th century, originally probably from a French quote, but the Star Trek phrasing is the one I hear the most, and probably nobody who uses it knows that's where it's from!
The Godfather has it as "Revenge is a dish that tastes best when it is cold".

@clacke Both of those variants could plausibly be translations of the same phrase in French or whatever. The Star Trek one has a better ring to it, though, which is probably why it's repeated more often.
