About to buy a new laptop for the first time since I started university 12 years ago. That laptop served me well for about 8 years, until my troll-dog spilled a bottle of oil on it, thus destroying its screen. I kept using it for some time as a desktop with an external monitor until I got an actual desktop from my partner's mother's company, which moved to a smaller office and had a spare computer. At that time I also got an office with a desktop at the uni, so no laptop was needed until now.
I have now finished my PhD (hurray!) and am starting a post-doc, for which I'll be needing a portable laptop. So it is time!
After all sorts of considerations, seems I'll be going for the Dell Latitude 5420 I5.
I am also making the move of buying a Windowsless laptop.
I need to decide what #linux distribution I want to install. I've been using #linux_mint since I've got the desktop, but I sort of want to try something new. Been thinking of giving #gnome a try, either with #fedora , which is "vanilla gnome", or with #pop_OS which has implemented features that I'm already used to in my workflow (and is still ubuntu-based so not very different).
