It makes me ashamed to think that the one true contender against #redhat and #RHEL on this side of the pond is currently run by a bunch of irradiated crybabies.

We were supposed to be better. What even is this?

You are bad at communicating and should feel bad about communicating. Stop pretending like you're not using community labour to prop up some future #SaaS. It's ridiculously insulting to the intelligence.

And if you call them out? Oh my lord. Geez Louise! Whate even is this?!

Hello Linux enthusiasts - we've asked for your favorite Linux distro , but now I want to know - what features of your Linux distro make you stay with that distribution? Is it the package manager, the simplicity, the software (or software choices), or even the UI? We would love to know!

- Eridian

The first #linux distro I used was #slackware, back in 1997, with a 2.0 kernel. I briefly tried #redhat but disliked its windows 95 aspect.

At that time I often had to compile software (or try to), there was always a missing library, or a version mismatch, or a different compiler / glibc version needed, and so on.

I've used Window Maker (based on the nextstep look) for a long time, until I had to use the windows installation provided by the company. I don't remember why I stopped using Linux at home.

In 2017 I tried several distros, #ubuntu, #elementaryos, used #debian for a while, often had drivers issues. Last year I installed #arch on a "old" laptop that could not receive #windows11, and I was very surprised to have no driver issue at all (except one thing : I've stopped trying to make the hybrid nvidia card working).

I also have a M1 mac mini (16g), a very pleasant machine, but I find #macos a little bloated, the ram used when you've just started the machine is a little high for my taste.

A thing I like in the macos UI is the top menu, reminding me the #amiga workbench. I hate each window having its own menu (and I hate the buttons being on the right side of the window), happily in #gnome that's easy to modify.

For hacking (in its original sense), nothing better than linux though.

That's all for now, I wanted to share a little bit of some of my computer history 🙂 thanks for reading.

Anyway you can thank #redhat for this one. I'm tired of IT corporations shitting a solution my way and me having to wipe the proverbial yaml diarrhea off my face.

For the ridiculous amounts of money y'all ask you should at least provide an upgrade path before deprecating 75% of your solution (RH AMQ Broker operator v7.11->v7.12 btw)

Beta version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 (RHEL10) running inside of Podman with Distrobox on a Fedora Linux 41 system.

When you've installed subscription-manager on the base system (in this case Fedora) and activated the system, then the entire RHEL repositories can be used in the RHEL container (and not only the UBI part).

Great for testing software under the pre-release of next RHEL!
