The wildest details in the Facebook memoir Meta is trying to bury
#meta 's #whatsapp is on such downfall in The Netherlands over #privacy concerns that they feel the need to make a statement.
Funnily enough the statement they make now on using the #metadata to #safeguard users against #spyware is such BS.
You should use #Signal too.
Signal has a feature to report spam by users too and actually can take action where required without sacrafising user privacy.

The Streisand Effect is in full force now with "Careless People," Sarah Wynn Williams' memoir about her time as director of global public policy at Facebook — the book is now at No. 3 on Amazon's bestsellers list. Former colleague Katie Harbath, who was Facebook's public policy director for global elections, recalls things differently to Wynn Williams, and says the book is "riddled with factual inaccuracies and exaggerations." Here's her post, "Careless People is Careless," on her Anchor Change Substack. "For those who didn’t work at the company or with Sarah, this book is a page-turner," she says. "Meta choosing to seek arbitration to block Sarah’s ability to promote it helps feed the intrigue for what is in it. (It is also ironic for Meta to be complaining about her not fact-checking the book when they just got rid of their fact-checking program.)"

... pushing #Threema for the general public, as it is the "least of all evil." This, in particular, as #WhatsApp owner #Meta is the worst/most leaky offender of them all.

True, however the most important criterion is that a replacement messenger app for #WhatsApp must have any chance at replacing #WhatsApp.
As a friend of mine phrased it here on Mastodon: "I have a hard time convincing my friend and family even to switch to [the known services,] #Signal or #Threema.

Sometime soon we're going to learn about activists being terrorized and blackmailed because Musk or Zuckerberg handed their private information directly over to Trump's goons.
And not one user will leave.
If you’re having any concerns about the excessive energy uses of #AI, don’t worry - companies are working tirelessly to bring those numbers down and are not shying away from doing whatever it takes to make them look good. Heroic, really.

Update no. 2:
Yesterday my 4-year-old woke up at 7am thus thwarting my plans to read #CarelessPeople for a good hour.
So today I woke up at 6am to resume reading the book. It’s THAT GOOD.
The leaders at #Meta have been shockingly irresponsible in their decisions since the early days. All they care about? Gathering data and influence and making big bucks. I’m so glad I got out of all their platforms and I’m on the #Fediverse instead.
History books won’t be kind to Zuck, Sandberg et al.
@chris #Meta has done an excellent job at promoting the book. #Shittenberg (aka #zuckerberg ) must be shitting his pants. Fucking moron.
An update: last night I started reading #CarelessPeople and I cannot emphasize enough HOW GOOD it is. A real page-turner.
No wonder #Meta executives are trying to shut down its promotional tour. They come across as shallow, greedy and irresponsible.
The author wrote in the prelude that working there was "like watching a bunch of fourteen-year-olds who’ve been given superpowers and an ungodly amount of money, as they jet around the world to figure out what power has bought and brought them."
#Meta won a legal victory this week against #Sarah #Wynn-#Williams,
a former employee who recently published a memoir of her time at the company titled
“Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism.”
An arbitrator ruled that the company has made a valid argument that Wynn-Williams, who worked at Facebook (now Meta) from 2011 to 2017, may have violated the
non-disparagement agreement she signed when leaving the company.
The ruling states that Wynn-Williams is temporarily prohibited from promoting
— or, “to the extent within [her] control, from further publishing or distributing”
— her book until private arbitration concludes.
However, “Careless People” remains available for purchase,
and may in fact be benefitting from the “Streisand Effect,”
in which attempts to suppress information only serve to further publicize it.
As of Sunday afternoon, “Careless People” was the number three bestselling book on Amazon.
Macmillan, which published “Careless People” through its imprint Flatiron Books, said in a statement that
the arbitrator’s decision “has no impact” on the publisher
and that it will “absolutely continue to support and promote” the book.
The publisher added that it is “appalled by Meta’s tactics to silence [its] author through the use of a non-disparagement clause in a severance agreement.”
“To be clear, the arbitrator’s order makes no reference to the claims within Careless People,” Macmillan said.
“The book went through a thorough editing and vetting process, and we remain committed to publishing important books such as this.”

#Signal adoption is really going well in the #Netherlands, these last few months! Found this lying on the coffee table in a church, yesterday—instructions on how to install Signal for the parishioners. Every day I get notifications for more contacts who've joined.
Getting my friends off #Meta and on the #Fediverse is going... less well. But I try not to let perfect be the enemy of good.
