@tzafrir exactly, why can't i register at a random IM provider and connect with other people thru their IM provider.
Such providers are not available, although the technology exists.

@psyBunny I maintain my own XMPP server (prosody) and Matrix homeserver (Synapse). Each is quite different but each connects to its respective network.

Centralized IM providers don't seem to want federation (Google Talk supported that long time ago, but that was an exception).

@tzafrir do you have anyone to talk to on those servers? from real life or just work related?

@psyBunny Not much, really. There are a few Israeli groups in Matrix with minimal traffic. I'm in touch with roughly one extra person on both protocols on a regular basis.
