Zivan - Childless Cat Guy
Apple Cider Vinegar | Science-Based Medicine by Steven Novella

I just watched the new Netflix series, Apple Cider Vinegar, which tells the story of Belle Gibson, an Australian woman who launched a wellness business based largely on the false claim that she had survived “terminal brain cancer”. It is worth a watch, and overall I feel the writers (this is a fictionalized version, not a documentary) captured the industry of fake cancer cures and their victims very well. I have some quibbles, which I will get to, but in the end the telling serves the viewer well.

The series focuses mainly on three young women, including Gibson and two fictional characters facing serious cancer diagnoses. Together they represent different aspects of the wellness industry, and specifically the industry of dubious cancer treatments. David Gorski actually captured this spectrum quite well in his article, True believers, entrepreneurs, and scammers in alternative medicine. All are represented in this show.

https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/apple-cider-vinegar/

#SBM #ScienceBasedMedicine #skepticism #wellness #scam #medicine #science

When it was about the judicial reform that threatened to destroy the separation of powers in Israel.

Reserve pilots are in a unique position in the army because they are volunteers. Woozle Hypertwin
I have to admit that although I kinda agree with the conclusion he's advocating, I'm finding the A/B tests a little sus:

2024-11-11 I Destroyed a Car to Explore Some Music Myths

In each case, the audio clips sound too identical to me.

I'd expect some subtle differences -- even if just from things being moved around in the room -- with the takeaway being that you couldn't definitely say one was better than the other or even which was "pro" and which was homebrew.

I can give a pass on the guitar test, because my view is that very little of an electric guitar's raw sound has anything to do with the body*; it's all in where the pickups are and how they're mixed together -- which seems to be his conclusion as well. (The body of my $200-in-1984ish electric guitar is plastic, and I've never had complaints about the sound -- but I'm definitely not a guitar virtuoso.)

One thing that stands out for me is that the speaker test never shows the mic in front of the pro speaker (only the homebrew), so we don't get to hear what that sounds like. This makes me wonder if the sound was all recorded from the pro gear, and then video clips of the homebrew were pasted over pieces of that, to make you think you were hearing the homebrew -- and he accidentally pasted the homebrew clip over the whole thing -- or maybe the homebrew speaker does sound that good; the quality of the speaker-elements does matter... and again I'm not really doubting his thesis.

The thesis confirms my pre-existing bias -- just a bit too well.

I've built my own condenser mic from a $3 Radio Shack acoustic buzzer, and while the results are surprisingly good under the right circumstances, I can't imagine getting the sound this exactly identical. Personal experience indicates that even different models of the same brand of microphone, even in the same price-range, will sound a little different.

I totally believe the car-guitar, however -- you can hear the strings pitch-bend when he's getting up on the hood, and I think the pro-guitar sounds just a tad more muffled than the car-guitar when he's plucking the strings individually.

TLDR: I don't know what to think, but also I don't 100% know what I'm talking about. :blobcathalo:

(*unless, of course, you mic it acoustically in order to get that "unplugged electric guitar" sound, which I have in fact done. The whole point of an electric guitar, though, is that it doesn't resonate...)

#musicProduction #skepticism

There are a couple of reasons why I'm skeptical of the "ACAB" notion:

• The word "all" almost never fits data when sample sizes are adequate. Therefore, while admittedly I have not done any research, the notion seems—prima facie—like an exaggeration.

• That possible exaggeration could marginally push more people, who knowingly enjoy being bastards, to pursue police careers; and marginally discourage other people. Neither outcome would be worth risking if my first point is valid.

The Where there is Woke podcast has come out with a four part series on the Dr. at the center of the Plandemic movies that spread such deadly misinformation at the height of the COVID pandemic.

They challenge Jon Ronson's portrayal of Dr. Judy Mikovits as a one-time serious scientist who got a raw deal and therefore turned conspiratorial.
