There is no budget to this film. Yet with all the limitation, Dilman Dila makes a gripping, suspenseful, sci-fi story that would not be too far from the works of somebody like David Cronenberg, if Cronenberg didn't have money.

I contributed an essay to this book, which is a collection of academic-type writings by Africans who write speculative fiction, on their influences and worldbuilding and such things. I particularly talk about how my research into pre-colonial African cultures inspired me to imagine a future without central governments, where technology has enabled direct democracy. Mahmoud Ahmed is a national icon of Ethiopia, a musician who rose to prominence during the time of Haile Selassie, and whose songs are known by every generation, though he hasn’t released a new track in decades. Now, he’s retiring, and @thecontinent spoke to him days before his final concert in Addis Ababa. Here’s the interview — writer Maya Misikir suggests listening to it accompanied by Ahmed’s most famous track, “Tizita,” (sometimes known as “Tezeta”) which is a song about nostalgia.

Q. across Africa as US Foreign Aid is withdrawn, will Chinese aid replace it?

Chinese aid has mostly been differently focusses (funding infrastructure rather than social services), and certainly China's Govt. may see the potential for extending influence, but unless its character is radically altered, for African countries while infrastructure may continue to improve with Chinese help, social (poverty-focussed) services look threatened unless African states themselves take them up?
