Looking to discuss (light) misogyny in Stromae lyrics. Please boost till it reaches someone who loves him but has been thinking.
I do not read French, just read translated lyrics and saw some imagery.
@LightBlueScreenOfWindowsUpdate i listen to him but would like to hear your thoughts..! i don’t read french either though
Well, in "Te Quiero" he mentions twice losing the children to a wife due to judges. This reminds me of a misogynistic, false, meme in my country (Israel) that family courts are stacked against men.
In "Ta Fête"'s music video, the only images of women are of the mother who's baking and the bride trying to literally tie him. >>
Forgot a (probable) translation to "Te Quiero" https://muzikum.eu/en/127-7337-152198/stromae/te-quiero-english-translation.html
In "Tous Les Memes", "reglement" in the chorus can be translated into "an instance of child support payment" or "court date" but could also be "next argument", but then he says regles, which is menstruation, as if women are only annoyed there. Some would say the song equally blames both parties from both points of views, but the chorus is clearly male
And then there's "Défiler" where he has some melancholic views on life, yet the song begins and ends with the girl whose head is in the cellphone and who wants to look like Gigi (Hadid?) but needs filters, without acknowledging all the pressure on teenage girls to comply with so many expectations just to be accepted as visible members of society
This is a not very comfortable view to read translations to Défiler
But come on! Boys are as much in cellphones as girls even though they're judged less
@LightBlueScreenOfWindowsUpdate yeah i feel that about him. i like his music but a lot of the things he says aren’t super nuanced, i do not like tous les mêmes at all. a lot of the subjects of his songs are assholes i think
@LightBlueScreenOfWindowsUpdate the narrative of ta fête is boring imo... the depiction of the heterosexual marriage as a trap or something forced is so euuuhgghh. like also compare with sommeil where there’s a line that goes “your mom / your wife / your girl / you have all of us” i think? sorry this is from memory. his songs are v heterosexual (and male centered) and don’t think to question that at all tbh
@LightBlueScreenOfWindowsUpdate this isn’t any spicy analysis sorry i haven’t listened to him for a while and i’m on my phone 😅
I was actually hoping to hear I'm exaggerating. I'm sort of ok with male centeredness if you're male, but why would he view relationship as so damaging to males, before and after the act? That's a bit more than just male-centeredness
(English is not my first language, sorry if that's not a word)
@LightBlueScreenOfWindowsUpdate no worries english isnt real! yeahhh its in part a pessimistic view of humanity in general? like in carmen and humain a l'eau for example. i think you could say he's criticizing men for being shitty, kinda "oh look at how terrible this guy im talking about is"
but he doesn't go far enough w/ his commentary imo, like you said w/ defiler a bunch of things get glossed over and his hot takes end up kind of.. just lukewarm
I guess. He still rocks more than most singers I know.
But I'd have added that the amount of critisicm he gives the two most common genders, is not properly adjusted to the amount of control their members have, under current power structures.
